Fond du lac voters will weigh in on an amendment to the U.S. constitution to regulate the flow of money to elections. The Fond du Lac city council voted 4-3 at their meeting Wednesday night to place the question on the fall ballot. Councilmembers Miller, Block, Giles and Foster voted in favor with council president Meyer, vice president Lorrigan and Merkel opposed. Three thousand signatures collected by the group Move to Amend were filed with the city clerk’s office last month asking the city council to place a resolution on the November 4th The group says the direct legislation statute gave the council two options…pass the resolution without alteration or submit the resolution to the electorate. Fond du lac resident Judy Goldsmith says Wisconsin Move to Amend supports a constitutional amendment that reads inalienable rights belong to human beings and that money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment and can be regulated in political campaigns. She says citizens are losing representation.
