8-1-14 berit beck homicide suspect convicted of attempted homicide in washington county

A man who has been considered a suspect in the Berit Beck cold-case murder in Fond du lac County has been convicted in Washington County of attempted homicide in the stabbing of his ex-girlfriend.  Craig Hron was convicted of stalking resulting in bodily harm while using a dangerous weapon, attempted armed carjacking, recklessly endangering safety and attempted first degree homicide.  Police say Hron stabbed the victim multiple times.  Hron has been on the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department radar for years in the disappearance and murder of Berit Beck in 1990.  She disappeared while driving from her home in Sturdevant to a seminar in Appleton.  Her van was found in the Forest Plaza parking lot and her body was found about a month later in a roadside ditch near Waupun.  Authorities found a hairbrush in Hron’s possession that had DNA consistent with Beck’s.   He has never been charged in the case.  Hron spent several years in prison on an armed robbery conviction.  Earlier this year the Sheriff’s Office announced they had identified a new suspect in the murder as a result of evidence from Beck’s van:  Sixty year old Dennis Brantner of Kenosha has not  been arrested or charged.   Hron is being held in Washington County Jail. His sentencing  hearing is set for Sept. 5. He faces up to 130 years in prison for the four felonies.
