9-3-14 dairy insurance program

The Fond du Lac County Dairy and Livestock agent says a new dairy insurance program involves less restrictions and is more flexibility.  Dairy farmers can begin signing up for the new program this week.  Dairy and Livestock agent Tina Coleman says the program is a kind of insurance that pays farmers when the difference between milk prices and feed prices shrink to a certain level. Farmers who enroll in the program will pay premiums for certain levels of coverage.  The Ag Department says an online tool can help farmers decide how much coverage they need.  Dairy farmers have struggled in recent years even with good milk prices.  Feed costs have risen because of demand for corn from the ethanol industry and recent drought.
