10-2-14 transportation fund-constitutional amendment

When voters go to the polls next month,  in addition to statewide races for governor and attorney general there is also a constitutional amendment on the ballot.  Wisconsinites will be asked to weigh in on whether the state transportation fund should be protected by the state’s constitution.  Executive director of the Transportation Development Association Craig Thompson says from 2003 through 2011, Wisconsin shifted more than a billion dollars from the transportation fund to the general fund.  Opponents to the constitutional amendment argue that when former governor Jim Doyle used transportation money to help make up for cuts in public education it was a matter of setting priorities.  Thompson says neighboring Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan and Ohio already have such language in their state constitutions.
