10-6-14 brianna rodgers-heart transplant

Six months after receiving a life-saving heart transplant and a little more than a month after her first birthday…a Fond du Lac girl is continuing her brave recovery.  Brianna Rodgers is the daughter of  Jason and Jessica Rodgers.  Born August 19th, 2013, Brianna was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Right Ventricle Syndrome.  On March 22nd doctors at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin performed a heart transplant.  Brianna’s grandmother, Evelyn Rodgers, says Brianna is taking several medications daily amd  still using a feeding tube but doctors are slowly working toward having her eat on her own.  Last week Brianna was able to eat for the first time on her own when she tasted some blueberries.  Rodgers says the parents are understandably nervous…but strong.  With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant families are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. Rodgers says while most of the medical bills are paid for…there are still thousands of dollars in outstanding expenses now and for the rest of Brianna’s life.  Donations may be mailed to the Children’s organ Transplant Association, 2501 West COTA Drive, Bloomington, Indiana 47403 or online at www.COTAforBriannaR.com.
