10-14-14 commonwealth development rumors unfounded

The president of the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corporation says its unfortunate that some members of the community have been spreading unfounded rumors about Commonwealth Development on social media.   Many of the Facebook posts have alleged that Commonwealth has been advertising its low income housing units in Fond du lac on billboards in Milwaukee and Chicago promising free cell phones and low rent.  FCEDC president Steve Jenkins says people who have made those posts have connected the wrong dots.  “According to a sign in Milwaukee that state Commonwealth.  That’s not the same Commonwealth.  Its a different type of company,” Jenkins told AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program.  “The dots don’t connect but you have people that jump way from A to Z without checking the alphabet in between to get the facts.”   Jenkins says the only thing unfounded comments like that do is hurt the community.  “Its frustrating to see people tear down someone and tear down a community just because they have an opinion and can hide in the shadows and post an opinion without checking the facts.”  Several of  the comments have racial undertones and Jenkins says at the very least are mean-spirited.  “I’m tired of these people taking pot shots at people who are trying to build a better community.  If you have a solution then get on with it otherwise I think you need to stay in your basement.”  Jenkins says Commonwealth is the single largest investor in Fond du Lac’s downtown.
