10-16-14 fdl county finance committee appropriates funds for armed security at county buildings

The Fond du Lac County finance committee has voted to add money to the budget to use armed sheriff’s deputies for building security should it be necessary at certain county buildings.   The issue of whether employees at social services or the Veterans Service Office should be allowed to carry concealed weapons was discussed at a committee meeting this week.  Committee member and County Board chairman Marty Farrell says the decision was made instead to earmark funds to allow armed deputies to be posted at those buildings in the event of a potential security threat.  “We would like to appropriate additional funds in the budget in order to bring in fully trained sheriff’s officers to be posted in a county building if we think there’s any likelihood at all of some kind of a problem,”   Farrell told WFDL news.  Farrell says he doesn’t believe it will be needed, it hasn’t been needed in the past.  But  just in case Farrell says the prudent and legal thing to do is have a person there who has the training and experience  to handle a tough situation.
