10-20-14 polar vortex? probably not this winter

Remember the polar vortex? It may be a distant memory this winter after federal forecasters said Thursday that a repeat of last year’s extremely cold and snowy weather east of the Rockies is “unlikely.”  And in more good news, the Great Lakes area is expected to be drier than average this year.  The winter weather forecast from meteorologists at the Climate Prediction Center said the western part of the U.S. should stay warm, while a cooler and wetter-than-average winter is  likely across the South.  Justin Schultz is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Milwaukee.   Schultz tells WFDL news its about a 50-50 chance for below normal temperatures in southern Wisconsin…but more likely for above normal temps in northern Wisconsin.   That doesn’t mean there won’t be cold air and snow, which is normal for much of the country during winter, it just won’t persist as much as it did last year, when extreme weather seemed to be stuck in place.
