10-21-14 violent crime up in fdl

The Fond du Lac police chief says while the numbers have fluctuated…overall violent crime is up in Fond du lac.  Several high profile cases recently involving shootings have Fond du lac residents on edge.  Police chief Bill Lamb says uniform crime reporting data shows that between 2008 and 2013 the violent crime rate fluctuated… with an overall increase of more than 30 percent.  “There was a decrease between 08 and 09 and then it trended steadily up between 2009 and 2012,”  Lamb said.  “Between 2012 and 2013 it actually dropped about 20 percent.  2014 is not in the books yet, but there have been a few shootings this year and other acts of violent crime that undoutedly are going to have an adversse affect on that come the end of the year.”   Lamb says there is no truth to rumors spread on social meda that there’s  a connection between Commonwealth Development housing projects and the increase in violent crime.  ‘Quite frankly we are perplexed when it comes to trying to figure out where a lot of that stuff is coming from because the numbers don’t indicate anything,”  Lamb told WFDL news.   Lamb describes some of the comments on Facebook as reckless and ignorant.  “There’s a lot of stuff that happens on social media that people would not otherwise say face to face to other people,”  Lamb said.  “In some instances I think you kind of get a bit of a mob mentality.  Let’s face it, there are far too many people out there that are just inclined to believe everything they see or read on the Internet.”
