10-24-14 wolf hunt

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Hunters are killing Wisconsin wolves so quickly this year it looks like the state’s third annual season is headed for an early end.  The four-and-a-half month-long season began on Oct. 15 with a statewide kill limit of 150 animals. As of Thursday morning, hunters had harvested 103 wolves, or nearly 70 percent of the quota.  DNR Large Carnivore Specialist Dave MacFarland says hunters didn’t reach the 70 percent mark last year until a full two weeks into the season, although the quota was set at 251 animals. Hunters needed 34 days to reach the 70 percent mark in 2012, when the quota was 116 animals. MacFarland says more hunters are in the woods early before individual hunting zones close and more are using traps.
