11-7-14 osha levies fines against elkhart lake manufacturer

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (AP) — The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited a Wisconsin manufacturer it says failed to train its employees on the hazards of working with chemicals.  OSHA investigated Bremer Manufacturing following the death of a 55-year-old worker who was found unresponsive in a restroom at the Elkhart Lake plant last May. The employee had worked at the foundry for 38 years and was exposed to isocyanates.  Department of Labor spokeswoman Rhonda Burke said Thursday chemical exposure at the plant was within acceptable levels. OSHA’s area director, Robert Bonack, says that even when the exposure limits are below permissible levels, employees can experience health consequences. OSHA says Bremer also failed to establish a written respiratory protection program. The agency has proposed fines of nearly $82,000. The aluminum castings manufacturer declined comment.
