11-25-14 christmas tree harvest

BARABOO, Wis. (AP) — Christmas tree growers in south-central Wisconsin say this year’s growing season was more favorable than past years.  Several Baraboo tree farms are seeing fewer trees lost this year. Jim and Suzanne Dohner, owners of Christmas Treeland, say they only lost a few hundred trees due to dry weather this year, compared to 10,000 trees lost in 2012 and 2013. The pair started planting trees in the late ’80s and selling them about a decade later.  Jack Meegan, owner of Christmas Valley Tree Farm, says he only lost a small amount of the 500 trees planted this year. He says he lost about 20 percent of his newly planted trees last year. This is the family-owned company’s 39th year in the Christmas tree business.
