1-30-15 uw fdl dean-budget cuts react

The UW Fond du Lac Dean says he’s not sure how the UW system would be able to absorb the cuts proposed by Governor Scott Walker in his two year state budget to be unveiled next week.  The governor has proposed cutting funding by $300 million to help solve a projected $2 billion budget shortfall.  UW Fond du Lac Dean John Short says the two year campuses are already lean and efficient.  “We’ve made some cuts and in the last cuts we cut parts of positions, we consolidated positions, we consolidated offices,”  Short told WFDL news.  The Madison campus will remain a part of the system, but all 26 campuses will have more autonomy from the state.  The governor said he will propose that future funding to UW be a block grant funded by sales tax revenue.  Short says he’s concerned about the message that sends to prospective students and faculty and staff.  Meanwhile, Fond du Lac Republican state senator Rick Gudex admits the size of the proposed cuts came as a surprise.  “There are a lot of people in the legislature who didn’t see that coming both from the Democrats and Republicans,”  Gudex told WFDL news.  “Both sides were kind of like a deer in the headlights when that came out.”
