3-17-15 waupun native cancer survivor

Oncology doctor Dustin Deming got the scare of his life a little more than two years ago when shortly after completing his training and accepting a faculty position at the UW Carbone Cancer Center in Madison he was diagnosed with rectal cancer.  Deming says at age 31 when he noticed rectal bleeding he thought at first it was probably just hemmorhoids.   Deming says the diagnosis was an earth shattering experience for a new husband and father.  “Our daughter Lucy was just a month old and so I went in for the colonoscopy with my wife and new baby and it was pretty obvious at the time of the colonoscopy it was cancer,”  Deming told WFDL news.   Doctors told him he had stage 3 rectal cancer and might not survive.  Deming underwent surgery and chemotherapy and today more than two years later he remains cancer free.  Deming says his story should be a wake-up call for others to get a check up and not to wait if they have any symptoms.  Deming says if he had been diagnosed 20 years ago he probably wouldn’t be alive today.  He says research has made tremendous strides over the years.  A fundraiser for GI cancer research was held recently at Judson’s Bowling Alley in Waupun on March first.  Deming is a Waupun native.
