4-18-15 sturgeon spawning

A spring ritual is underway in Wisconsin. State Department of Natural Resources biologist Ryan Koenigs say the sturgeon spawning season has started on the Wolf River.  Koenigs says the spawning is about nine days earlier than usual.  “Fish are spawning throughout the whole Winnebago system.  There are probably fish spawning on the upper Fox River, they’ve been spawning there since Wednesday,”  Koenigs told AM 1170 WFDL news.  “The real run right now is taking place on the Wolf River.”  Biologists say some male sturgeon migrate every spring, but the females make the trip every three to five years.
