5-7-15 rolling meadows golf course-county executive

The Fond du Lac County executive says he supports Rolling Meadows golf course.     At least one county board supervisor has suggested selling or downsizing the golf course.  County executive Al Buechel says the bottom line is the county board has to decide how important the course is to the community.  “We can cut everything and in the end what do we lose in this community when we’re done?   That’s what the real question is and that’s what the county board is going to have to grapple with,”  Buechel told WFDL news.  The golf course has lost money seven years in a row including $256,000 last year.  Buechel says as long as the value of the asset exceeds the liability the county should continue to operate it and right now he says “there’s still a lot of cushion there.”   Buechel says when you look at the financial numbers he’s confident the county can recover more than the current deficit.   Buechel says he also disagrees with a suggestion to close nine holes and build a county garage on the property.  Two county committees are discussing the matter at a joint meeting this evening.   Buechel says if a study committee is formed he hopes it resembles the committee that examined expanding the golf course In 1989…comprised of county board supervisors and citizens.
