5-28-15 beaver dam farmer charged with crop insurance fraud

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A farmer in Beaver Dam is being accused of defrauding a crop insurance company. The U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday that a federal grand jury indicted 37-year-old Jeffrey Lewke on nine counts of crop insurance fraud.  The indictment accuses Lewke of defrauding a company insured by the Federal Crop Insurance Corp., which provides insurance to farmers for unavoidable crop losses. According to the indictment, the fraud went on from 2009 to 2013 and includes Lewke falsely representing that he couldn’t plant corn due to excessive moisture on land actually planted with corn.  The Justice Department says Lewke farmed as many as 12,000 acres in Wisconsin in 2011 and 2012.
