7-1-15 haase back home after race across america

A Fond du Lac bicyclist is a hometown hero with the highest finish by an American in the grueling Race Across America since 1999.  Dave Haase finished in second place…biking 3000 miles, coast to coast in a little over eight days.  Haase says he was able to stay ahead of bad weather, averaging more than 340 miles a day.  In addition to crossing the Rocky Mountains in Colorado…Haase says the first days through the scorching California desert may have been the most challenging with temperatures above 100 degrees. Haase says he had a close call with a deer on a winding stretch of road in Pennsylvania.  “My pace vehicle was behind me and a deer was on the side of the road and it ran in front of a vehicle coming at us (opposite lane) ran right behind my bike, just missed my bike,”  Haase told WFDL news.
