MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Media advocates are arguing that Wisconsin’s open records law doesn’t need a substantial rewrite to address police body camera videos. A panel addressed the issue during a state Department of Justice summit examining whether the law needs to be updated to reflect changes in technology. Attorney General Brad Schimel began the discussion by asking whether images containing nudity, sensitive statements, interrogations and gruesome shots of bodies and blood should be released to the public. James Friedman is an attorney who specializes in media law and serves as a member of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation’s board. He said the open records law currently allows record custodians to apply a balancing test to decide what to release and they can legally make redactions.
