9-1-15 so long sisters

ST. NAZIANZ, Wis. (AP) — The last two Salvatorian nuns in the Manitowoc County village of St. Nazianz are pulling up stakes.  When 91-year-old Sister Rita and 87-year-old Sister Jane leave Aug. 31 to spend their twilight years with two other sisters in Portage, it will bring down the curtain on a 119-year-old legacy of service.  In August 1896, three Salvatorian nuns came to St. Nazianz by request to care for the aging sisters in the Oschwald community, the village’s first religious presence.  By 1912, the Salvatorian nuns were cultivating farmland and raising cows, pigs and chickens.  They were baking altar breads and hosting retreats for 100 parishes.  Most of the nuns left after a storm devastated the area in 2000. Three of them, including Sisters Rita and Jane, stayed behind.
