9-4-15 fdl area health organizations voice opposition to proposed “pedal pub” ordinance

Several different health care organizations and coalitions have come out in opposition to a proposed pedal pub ordinance in the city of Fond du Lac.  Fond du lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says eight groups or organizations have stated their opposition to the proposed ordinance expressing concern about the message it sends to children  The organizations opposed include Drug Free Communities of Fond du Lac County, Comprehensive Service Integration, the Fond du Lac County Board of Health, Fond du Lac County Healthy 2020, The ARC of Fond du Lac, FABOH, Mahala’s Hope and the Blandine Halfway House.    “My thought is people drink too much whether its actually the definition of binge drinking or not the idea is that people drink too much.  Its everywhere for everybody to see,”  Mueller told WFDL news.  “So with the pedal pubs, this is just an addition to normalizing the idea that drinking is okay for our children.”  She says the latest Fond du Lac County Community Health Assessment survey shows binge drinking is a huge problem in Fond du Lac county.  “When you look at the national average of binge drinking for adults its 17 percent.  When you at Wisconsin that percentage increases to 23 percent.  But when you look at the percentage of Fond du Lac County adult residents binge drinking, it more than doubles the rate of Wisconsin.  Our binge drinking rate here is 42 percent.  That’s startling.”    Mueller says she would support a quadricycle ordinance without the alcohol. The city council tabled action on the ordinance at their meeting last month.
