10-13-15 state lawmaker says proposed transgender bathroom bill is about safety

The co-author of a bill that would bar transgender students from using the locker room or bathroom assigned to the gender with which they identify says safety and privacy to students is the main concern.   Republican state representative Jesse Kremer of Kewaskum says the bill would require school boards to designate bathrooms and locker rooms as exclusive to one gender.  Kremer says the safety concern isn’t about transgender students…its about sexual deviants taking advantage of the opportunity to walk into a bathroom of the opposite sex.  “That girl does not know if that is an innocent transgender individual who wants to use that bathroom or if its some sexual deviant or peeping tom that is just in there for no good,”   Kremer told WFDL news.  Kremer says he disagrees with the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund that the bill singles out transgender students in Wisconsin for discrimination.  “If I wanted to single out students this bill wouldn’t be trying to provide protections for students and also, under this bill, if someone believes a school district is violating this policy, the school district can be taken to task for that also.”
