MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker says whether applicants for state jobs should be required to check a box indicating whether they’ve been convicted of a crime is a negotiable issue. Whether to include the provision is holding up a bill that would overhaul the Wisconsin’s civil service system to make it easier to hire and fire state workers. The proposal would do away with the requirement that applicants indicate whether they have past convictions. But Sen. Steve Nass canceled a committee vote on the bill because he objects to removing it. Walker said Tuesday he doesn’t care whether the requirement is in or out, as long as the larger goals are achieved. Walker says he expects the Assembly to vote on the bill this fall and the Senate next year.
