11-24-15 fdl school superintendent concerned about school crime data proposal

The Fond du Lac School superintendent says he doesn’t see a need for a bill that would require data about crimes committed on school grounds to be more readily available for parents and others to view alongside test scores and graduation rates.  One bill calls for all public high schools, as well as those in the voucher and charter school programs to report crime data for inclusion in the state report card.  Fond du lac school superintendent Dr. Jim Sebert says that data is already available from a variety of sources including the DPI website or the school district.  “Its another idea that you just don’t know what its trying to fix or what it’s trying to solve,”  Sebert told WFDL news.  “I’ve read it, I’ve scratched my head in terms of okay you put it on a report card.  Are you going to measure it?  Are you going to get scored on it?  How is it going to impact what we’re doing?”   A competing proposal seeks a limited pilot program.  The push comes on the heels of the voucher program expanding and the lifting of enrollment caps. School choice advocates have used crime data to persuade students to transfer to what they consider to be safer voucher or charter schools.
