11-25-15 veterinary loan program-fdl and dodge counties

Twenty eight Wisconsin counties including Fond du lac and Dodge are getting some added help for veterinary services.  The Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection says the counties, previously underserved by veterinarians will receive payments administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.  The program provides veterinary services un rural, underserved areas by awarding loan repayment benefits to new veterinarians in exchange for a three year commitment to serve in a shortage area.  One of the reasons for shortages is the heavy cost of education that leaves graduates with average debt of more than $135,000.   Graduates opt for jobs in bigger cities where they can receive better salaries. Average awards are more than $95,000 including loan repayment and a federal tax benefit.
