1-9-20 fdl county sheriff’s office warns residents to stay off ice on area lakes and ponds

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office is warning people to stay off the ice on area bodies of water.    Above normal temperatures, rain and high winds created dramatic ice shoves on the shores of Lake Winnebago, resulting in large  areas of open water.  Sheriff’s sergeant Jeff  Bonack says he’s never seen anything like this in his 30 years in the office.  While the weather can change in a hurry, Bonack admits he is very concerned about the sturgeon spearing season scheduled to begin in about a month.  “You talk to some of the longtime sturgeon spearers, you pick their brain, and they don’t ever remember this situation that is presenting itself,”  Bonack told WFDL news.   “Even if we do get some cold weather, I think its too late in the year to produce significant ice that everybody is used to for sturgeon spearing.”   Bonack says people also have to be careful around retention ponds and smaller bodies of water that may appear to be frozen over, but actually have a very thin layer of ice.
