1-17-20 fdl lawmaker says dpi audit is long overdue

The chair of the Assembly Education committee says an audit of the Department of Public Instruction focusing on declining reading test scores is long overdue.  State representatives Jeremy Thiesfeldt and John Nygren are calling for the audit.  Thiesfeldt says specifically the Legislative Audit Bureau would examine the methods Wisconsin schools use to teach reading.  “This is not across the board in every school because individual districts sometimes have fairly strong control over this, but this is part of what we want to find out in the audit is how pervasive is what I believe is a poor reading methadology for instruction in our youngest children,”  Thiesfeldt told WFDL news.   Thiesfeldt says recent Forward Exam results show that 60 percent of Wisconsin students cannot read or write at grade level.
