1-24-20 evers redistricting plan-react

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers’ plan to create a nonpartisan redistricting commission to draw the state’s electoral maps next year may put pressure on the Republicans who control the Legislature, but it won’t force them to change their plans for next year. Republican leaders showed no signs of taking a different approach to redistricting following Evers’  announcement of  the plan during his State of the State speech Wednesday.  Republican State representative Mark Born of Beaver Dam says Republicans will not support Evers’ plan.  “Total unconstitutional gimic,”  Born told WFDL news.  “It’s clear in the Wisconsin constitution that the legislature has the sole responsibility of  every census, drawing the maps.”  Assembly Democratic leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh says folks should remind themselves what we’re here to do in a democracy.  “…and that’s represent the public and have the public chose their politicians not the other way around,”  Hintz told WFDL news.   The Legislature is empowered under the state constitution with redrawing maps every decade.
