The public is invited to attend a heroin summit at the Fond du Lac High School Performing Arts Center. Two of the program’s keynote speakers are recovering heroin addicts Anthony Alvarado and Doug Darby. The pair formed the group Rise Together and travel the state sharing how they went from rock bottom to recovery. Darby says he nearly died three times from heroin overdoses, spent time in prison for drug-related offenses and says he is fighting every day to stay sober and bring his message of survival to the community. “We’re talking about life on life’s terms and what it means to recover because even someone that isn’t faced with addiction has gone through some traumatic things in their life. Life is tough,” Darby told AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program. In 2014, the city of Fond du Lac saw an increase in suspected overdose calls of 30 percent. Fond du Lac paramedics administered the heroin antidote Narcan to 26 individuals, resuscitating 23 overdose victims, compared to 13 the year before. The summit starts at 6:30 Wednesday evening at the high school performing arts center. Its sponsored by the Fond du Lac Elks Club
