The Downtown Fond du Lac Partnership (DFP) hosted business owners, property owners, city officials and other downtown stakeholders at its annual meeting on January 21, 2016 to celebrate the accomplishments of 2015 and recognize award winners. Amy Hansen, DFP Executive Director, discussed property improvement opportunities for building owners and the economic development opportunities for downtown. “In 2015, the Building Improvement Grant pool of $49,000 was quickly exhausted when 15 property owners applied. Awards were granted to 8 of the 15 projects. In 2016, thanks to an increase in city funding, we have $75,000 in the grant pool,” said Hansen. “2015 saw the opening of 25 new businesses, 4 business expansions, and a near 100% occupancy rate for downtown residential units.” Hansen also encouraged attendees to assist with the Market Analysis for downtown by taking two surveys currently available for community members at www.downtownfdl.com. Dusty Krikau, DFP Director of Communication and Special Events, recapped the events and promotions from 2015, highlighting the economic impact of the Downtown Fond du Lac Farmers Market which provided more than $800,000 in additional economic activity and 16 jobs in downtown as well as $6.6 million in additional economic activity and 60 jobs in the Fond du Lac Metropolitan area. The DFP presented six awards during the meeting:
The Design of the Year Award was presented to Ted Buetow and Randy Cunzenheim for Theo’s 24. A meticulous façade restoration that included new windows, doors, masonry, and restoring historical features including cornices and trim work.
Tracy Mathweg received the Interior Renovation of the Year Award for her attention to detail as she hand selected and designed fixtures, lighting, window displays, sales counters and interior signage for Lillian’s new location at 27 S. Main St.
The recipient of the 2015 “Friend of Downtown” award was Lisa Pauly for her deep and sustained commitment to the downtown for more than a decade, serving on committees, advising special projects, and volunteering her time at events.
Leo Metivier received the 2015 Volunteer of the Year award for his invaluable assistance as head of operations for Fondue Fest.
New in 2015, the community had the opportunity to nominate businesses to receive the Best New Business Award and the Downtown Legacy Award.
Mix It Up Bakery was recognized as the Best New Downtown Business. Scott and Jeanie Page completed extensive renovations before opening in March 2015 and have gone from a staff of two to twelve in only ten months. In addition to great baked goods and excellent customer service, they also donate all tips to local non-profits.
The Downtown Legacy Award, awarded to a business that has been in downtown for at least 50 years, was given to Kitz & Pfeil True Value Hardware. As one nominator said, “they are passionate about their customers, their business and this community.” Store manager Kay Schustedt, who has been part of the company for 38 years, accepted the award.
The Downtown Fond du Lac Partnership is the administrative arm of the Business Improvement District, which is comprised of 284 businesses, 76% of which are locally owned.
