6-12-20 justice in policing act

Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin says federal reform is needed to improve police training and practices in the wake of the death of George Floyd  in Minneapolis.    Senator Baldwin joined other Democratic lawmakers this week in introducing the Justice in Policing Act.   Baldwin says the Act is designed to hold police accountable and change the culture of law enforcement through transparency and accountability. Baldwin says police need  alternatives  to arresting people with mental health or addiction isssues.  “We’ve increasingly over many years built an incarceration model for those who need treatment,”  Baldwin told WFDL news.   The Justice in Policing Act would establish a National Police Misconduct Registry to prevent problematic officers who are fired or leave an agency from moving to another jurisdiction without accountability, bans chokeholds and limits the transfer of military grade equipment to state and local law enforcement.   The bill also mandates training on racial, religious, and discriminatory profiling for all law enforcement.
