8-18-20 fall high school sports

Some fall high school sports in the Fond du Lac School District are starting this week and the district continues to review other sports including football.  Athletic director David Michalkiewicz says girls tennis, swimming and diving, girls golf and cross country started Monday.  Michakiewicz  says if there are enough conference opponents Fondy football will continue, but he says that’s out of their control.  “If that’s not the case will have to push everything into the fall alternative season.  But at the same time we have issues with that as well,”  Michalkiewicz said.   “…when you’re talking about trying to play outdoor sports;  soccer, football in early March,  it’s Wisconsin.  There’s going to be snow on the ground, there’s going to be wet fields.   He says the District doesn’t have the the facilities that make that a “great option.”   He says if certain fall sports are moved to spring the virus will still be here and there are no guarantees the COVID situation will be any better in the spring than it is now.  “It’s going to be a difficult spot we’re going to be dealing with and we’ll continue to work with the FVA and county health and with WIAA and also DHS in putting together protocols and procedures that will mitigate the risk as much as possible.”   If football is played this fall, Michalkiewicz says initially there will be no fans in the stands.   He says that would eventually be re-evaluated to see if parents would be allowed to watch games.   “Right now our biggest objective is to be able to play the game.”
