9-24-20 fdl council holds off on binding agreement

A binding agreement between the city of Fond du Lac and a business group for improvements at Lakeside Park is on hold.   Fond du Lac city council president Brian Kolstad ruled a motion to pass an amended agreement was not valid and a motion to overturn his ruling failed.   City councilmember Ben Giles says he is disappointed, but still hopeful a negotiated agreement can be worked out.  “If the donors are still around and would like to still do business with us we’re going to engage in a very similar agreement going forward,”  Giles told WFDL news.   Councilmember Alicia Hans says holding off was the responsible thing to do.  She says such a commitment deserves more deliberation, thought and discussion.  “It was a really hard meeting to come into with being put into a position of having to make a decision tonight according to the contract,”  Hans said.  “I’m hopeful we can continue positive discussions with Lakeside Forward.  Lakeside Forward had threatened to withdraw it’s pledged donations  toward the project if the council did not approve the agreement at their Wednesday night meeting.    Earlier in the meeting dozens of people spoke in favor and against the plan. The plan includes a restaurant on the lighthouse peninsula, walking paths, and an amphitheater on Oven Island.
