3-10-21 friends group posts email appearing to contradict fdl councilmember over lakeside park plan

As the Fond du Lac city council discusses a Lakeside Park Enhancement Agreement at their meeting Wednesday night comes news of an email obtained by a citizens group opposed to commercial development at the park.  The email, posted on the Friends of Lakeside Park Facebook page appears to contradict comments by Fond du lac councilmember Ben Giles that he was approached by business leaders about the plan to build a restaurant and amphitheater at Lakeside Park.   When Giles asked the council in the fall of 2019 to “pause” plans to build a new pavilion at the park he stated private investors reached out to him.   But in the email from last March, a representative of the business group writes Giles   “You came to us with this plan and we have all worked extremely hard to further develop and supported it as best we can thus far.”   Giles told WFDL news the citizens group is “twisting his words” to make him look bad.  Giles says he initially contacted three businesses to ask them if they would support stopping the project to halt building a new pavilion at the park.  Giles says from there the businesses solicited donations and came back to him and said if the pavilion project is halted “they would support the park and donate.”  Under terms of the contract Thursday is the deadline to pull out of the agreement.
