6-10-21 fdl girl continues to recover following bike vs vehicle collision

The Fond du Lac Fire Chief says a serious injury vehicle versus bicycle accident is another reminder that bicyclists and motorists need to be aware of their surroundings.  Eight year old Miaya Hartwig of Fond du Lac  was critically injured when she was struck by a car as she was attempting to cross East Johnson Street Monday night.   She is in stable condition at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee with head and shoulder injuries.  According to the police log the bicycle did not have any light, the girl was not wearing any reflective clothing and the vehicle driver, 50 year old James Livieri, of North Fond du Lac  said he did not see her.  Livieri immediately stopped, called 911 and remained at the scene for Officers and First Responders to arrive. While the accident remains under investigation, preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.  Fond du Lac  Fire Chief Pete O’Leary says if you are riding a bike when its dark you need to have a working light on your bike.  O’Leary says wearing a bike helmet can prevent serious injury.  Police say Hartwig was not wearing a helmet.
