Fond du Lac residents joined law enforcement officers  this week to honor five local law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.  Officer Joseph Kurer was the latest name added to the Police/Fire Memorial at Hamilton Park.  Officer Kurer died last September from COVID-19.   Officer Kurer was one of 440 police officers across the United States last year to die from the virus.  Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein says public safety “couldn’t stay home.”  “These were individuals that took an oath and said regardless of what’s happening in our nation and in our communities we are going to be there for our community.”    In addition to officer Kurer, Fond du Lac  police officers William Prinslow, Nick Klaske and  Craig Birkholz  and State Patrol trooper Trevor Casper were also honored during the National Peace Officers Memorial ceremony.  Officer Prinslow was shot and killed in 1898 while attempting to apprehend three robbery suspects.  Officer Klaske died after being shot while chasing a burglary suspect in 1961 and officer Craig Birkholz was shot and killed in March 2011 while responding to a sexual assault incident.  Trooper Casper was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a bank robbery and murder suspect.
