5-19-23 fatal head on collision in fdl county

Investigators say distracted driving with a cellphone may be to blame for a fatal head on collision in Fond du Lac County that claimed two lives.  Fond  du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says the crash happened about 1pm  on Highway 23 near Heinrich Road in the town of Lamartine.   Both the driver of the eastbound car that crossed the center line,  a 19 year old Rosendale woman, and the driver of  the westbound vehicle,  a 64 year old Ripon man,   were pronounced dead at the scene.  Witnesses indicate that this eastbound vehicle had previously crossed the centerline once already before coming back in the lane of travel and then crossed again before striking the westbound vehicle.    Investigators say based on witness statements and the initial investigation, it is  believed that the driver of  the eastbound vehicle may have been distracted by use of a cell phone, however they say this has not been confirmed and the cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office.  Deputies from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Lamartine Fire Department and First Responders, North Fond du Lac Fire and EMS, and Wisconsin State Patrol responded to the scene.
