5-26-23 wisconsin budget committee rejects evers’ plan to make tax agents permanent

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Legislature’s budget-writing committee has rejected Gov. Tony Evers’ plan to make permanent nearly 40 revenue agent positions who are meant to enforce the state’s tax laws. The 2017 to 2019 state budget established 38 agent positions within the Department of Revenue to concentrate on collecting delinquent taxes. The positions were set to be eliminated in September 2021 but the 2019 to 2021 state budget extended them until June 2025. Evers has proposed making the positions permanent in the 2023 to 2025 state budget. Republicans who control the budget committee on Thursday rejected that plan, voting instead to extend the positions only through September 2025.
