6-5-23 republicans reject funding for top uw building project

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican lawmakers have rejected funding for the University of Wisconsin’s top priority, the proposed replacement of an engineering building on the Madison campus. The GOP-controlled Joint Finance Committee voted Thursday to fund about 60% of the state government and UW projects that Gov. Tony Evers wanted. The committee voted to fund about $2.4 billion in building projects, down from the $3.8 billion the Democrat Evers had asked for. Republicans called that an unrealistically high request. Democrats say not funding nearly $200 million for the new engineering building is politically motivated and short-sighted. The plan must be approved by the full Legislature and Evers before taking effect.
