9-18-14 civil rights group files gay marriage lawsuit

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A civil rights group has filed a lawsuit seeking recognition of gay couples who married in June after a judge struck down Wisconsin’s ban on same-sex marriage.  U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb found the ban was unconstitutional. Hundreds of gay couples married before Crabb put her ruling on hold pending appeals a week later. The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Crabb earlier this month but state attorneys have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to take the case.  The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday in Madison arguing the couples who married during the week between Crabb’s ruling and her decision to put it on hold don’t know if their unions are valid. The lawsuit asks the court to recognize the marriages.
