10-2-14 world dairy expo-interpreters

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The World Dairy Expo is offering interpreters to help hundreds of international visitors feel at home in Madison.  Ron Eustice, an interpreter who speaks six languages, says his fellow volunteers try to make the expo’s foreign attendees feel more comfortable by using a language they understand with a dose of Wisconsin hospitality. He says the goal is to provide a place for people to go for help.  The expo opened Tuesday with 639 foreign attendees registered by mid-afternoon. Lead interpreter Pierre Schmidt says Spanish, Russian and Portuguese speakers were most in demand.  Another expo interpreter says visitors from China and Japan often bring their own interpreters, so expo volunteers who speak the nations’ languages won’t be needed as much. He also says many attendees representing foreign businesses don’t require interpreters.
