10-16-14 state school aid

Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction figures show about half of public school districts will get more state aid this year than the previous school year.  The state will provide nearly $4.5 billion in general aid to schools for the 2014-2015 school year, an increase of about 2 percent. General aid is the largest source of funding for K-12 public schools. Local district can also raise money through local property taxes. The Fond du Lac School District will get about $2.5 million more.  DPI spokesman John Johnson says that because of increases in per-pupil funding for private voucher and charter schools, the state directed more money to those schools in Milwaukee than ever before. The funding for voucher schools in Milwaukee — at about $61 million — comes from reduced aid to Milwaukee Public Schools.
