1-25-17 fdl council to discuss lead service line ordinance

The Fond du Lac public works director is asking the city council to consider an ordinance to replace private lead water service lines.   Jordan Skiff will make a presentation at Wednesday night’s city council meeting .   Skiff says the options  include the status quo, voluntary replacement  or mandatory replacement of lead service lines.  Milwaukee’s utility will start replacing lead pipes that deliver water from the street mains to homes and to replace lead pipes immediately if there’s a leak or line failure. Skiff, says it makes sense to do that here.  “The EPA is looking to create a rule that makes anytime we as a city replace our portion of the water service that we work with the property owner to make sure that the rest of that water service is changed at the same time,”  Skiff told WFDL news.  Milwaukee is also distributing free lead filters and Skiff says that’s something the city of Fond du lac could also explore. Skiff says the effort is expected to take decades to complete.
