8-29-17 dogs in parks ordinance-a year later

Fond du Lac city officials say there have been few complaints in the year that residents have been allowed to walk their pet dogs in some city parks.  The  city council approved an ordinance a year ago that allows people to walk their dogs on leashes in eight parks, but not Lakeside or Buttermilk Creek Parks.  Public Works director Jordan Skiff says overall he and parks director John Redmond feel the present ordinance is working well.  “I think what we have in place is still a good compromise,”  Skiff told WFDL news.  Dogs are allowed in Lakeside Park West and the Harborview Drive trail which borders the south end of Lakeside Park.   Skiff says there have been a handful of problems involving people walking their dogs near the park petting zoo.  “Whether its just people not seeing the signs or people choosing to ignore them, that has been the primary times we have been getting some complaints,”  Skiff said.  Skiff says he doesn’t believe there is a need to expand the ordinance to allow dogs throughout Lakeside Park.  The issue was discussed at Monday night’s Advisory Park Board meeting.
