The World Health Organization is estimating that nearly 15 million people were killed either by the coronavirus or by its impact on overwhelmed health systems in the first two years of the pandemic.  That is more than double the current official death toll.  The U.N. health agency said in a report that most of the fatalities were in Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas.  Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says health officials are always trying to lessen those statistics.  “Looking at from that way we’re better able to better target those areas to provide education and information that may not be getting to groups versus other groups,” Mueller told WFDL news. The count of U.S. deaths from COVID-19 is nearing one million.  More than 700,000 people 65 and older died.  Men died at higher rates than women.  White people made up most of the deaths overall.  Yet an unequal burden fell on Black, Hispanic and Native American people considering the younger average age of minority communities.
