5-4-23 tardive dyskinesia awareness week

Approximately 600,000 Americans live with an involuntary movement disorder associated with taking certain mental health medicines.  Tardive Dyskinesia is characterized by uncontrollable. abnormal and repetitive movements of the face, torso and or other body parts.  NAMI Fond du Lac executive director Brad Leonard says TD may impact people’s overall mental health and can have physical, social, and emotional consequences.  Leonard says NAMI Fond du Lac is one of 90 NAMI affiliates across the country and the only chapter in the state to receive a $5,000 grant to help raise awareness about tardive dyskinesia.  Approximately 70%, or 7 out of 10 people living with TD, have not yet been diagnosed.   This week is  TD Awareness Week, which occurs during Mental Health Awareness Month.
