8-16-23 judge dismisses lawsuit seeking to remove roadblocks set up by wisconsin tribe

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit seeking to block a northern Wisconsin tribe from barricading roads on its reservation. U.S. District Judge William Conley says the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has sovereign rights over reservation roadways that have been the subject of a heated dispute between the tribe and non-tribal land owners with businesses and homes on reservation land. The land agreements allowing non-tribal people to use the roads expired about a decade ago and have not been renewed. The tribe first blocked the roads in January. Conley dismissed the lawsuit Tuesday, saying the land owners didn’t have a case under federal law.
