4-16-24 dodge county treasurer says review your 2024 property assessment

Dodge County Treasurer, Kris Keith, reminds taxpayers to review their 2024 Notice of Changed Assessment if they receive one from their assessor. She says, “this is the time of year assessors begin finalizing assessments.  A property’s 2024 assessment is a snapshot of that property’s status as of January 1 each year.”   December’s real estate bills are based on each year’s January 1 assessment. Tax bill calculations are based on that assessment, after local levies and tax rates are known later in the year. Keith wants taxpayers to
understand that they cannot dispute their real estate tax bill when it arrives in December. “That’s why it’s so important to review your assessment each year that your taxes are based on”, she says.  Keith tells taxpayers, “If you get mail from your assessor, it’s probably a Notice of Changed Assessment,  required by state law any time a total assessment of real property changes, unless there’s a $500 or less change for agricultural land, then notices are not required.”  She recommends taxpayers look closely at their notice for Open Book dates and times. Open Book is a formal time to review the tax roll and your assessment, and discuss with the assessor, before the assessment roll is finalized at the Board of Review.  To learn more about property assessment, Open Book, and Board of Review, go online to https://www.co.dodge.wi.gov , Departments, Treasurer page, and our Taxpayer Resources page for helpful Wisconsin Department of Revenue information and links.
