4-19-24 5 year old fdl boy with rare kidney disease undergoes kidney transplant

A Fond du Lac boy who has a rare genetic disease has undergone a life-saving kidney transplant.  Five year old Greyson Neubauer was born premature and required hemodialysis within a week after birth.  His mother, Katie Rusch, says Greyson was diagnosed with what’s called Denys-Drash, a rare genetic disease that affects only 500 people worldwide.  Rusch says it put Greyson at high risk for kidney cancer, and doctors removed Greyson’s kidneys when he was seven months old.  “They (kidneys) weren’t working anyway.   He is also at a risk for a different type of cancer so he is screened every six months, but the main thing was the kidneys not working.”   Rusch says she is very grateful someone was interested in donating a kidney for Greyson.  She says Greyson’s renal failure had gradually worsened over the past five years and the transplant provides new hope for the future.  “Yes, he’s in fairly good health now and we’re all very excited to start this next journey.”   “He’s a very energetic little guy, he loves sports, and he’s very active, so it’s going to be neat to see how he responds to the kidney transplant.”   Rusch says it’s been challenging for Greyson and the family, but somehow they have always found a way to make it work.   On Saturday, May 4 a fundraiser for the family  will be held at Korneli’s on the Avenue.  “I can’t believe the love and support that we’ve seen,”  Rusch said.  “My aunt and cousin’s wife put it (fundraiser) together and it’s just going to be a really great event.  We’re hoping to get some awareness for organ donation.”   The fundraiser will be held from 2pm to 8pm.  You can donate with Venmo or send a check to the Associated Bank c/0 Gathering for Greyson Fundraiser.
