5-1-24 resources for delinquent taxpayers

Dodge County Treasurer Kris Keith wants property owners who are delinquent on their taxes to know there may be information on her webpage that could help.    “If you are behind on your real estate taxes,  then expect a “NOTICE OF REAL ESTATE TAX DUE” to arrive in your mailbox in early May,”  Keith said.   The Treasurer’s Office does not offer any financial assistance, or interest or penalty forgiveness, but  “we can steer you to some resources that may help” Keith says.   Keith says if you are a veteran, you may be eligible to receive the Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit on your income tax.   You may call Dodge County’s Veterans Services Office at 920-386-3799 to learn more.  Another program  is the Critical Assistance Program and loans through the Foundation for Rural Housing.   Keith says the program is currently closed but will reopen in June 2024.   Applicants’ income must be under the 50% County Median Income. For more information, contact the Dodge County Aging & Disability Resource Center at 920-386-3580.   Keith says “just because you receive a notice, you are not at risk for tax foreclosure.”    She says the consequences of paying property taxes late is interest and penalty charges back to February 1 when the tax became delinquent.  Interest is charged at 1% per month and penalty at .5% per month, both under the authority of § 74.47(1) Wis. Stats.   To review other taxpayer resources, go online to https://www.co.dodge.wi.gov , Departments, Treasurer page, and our Taxpayer Resources page. Contact Kris Keith and her staff at the Dodge County Treasurer’s office at 920-386-3782.
